The Chisholm Trail

In 2017, the Chisholm Trail turns 150 years old. Millions of cattle traveled it when driven north by cowboys. The trail was used from 1867 through 1884 and ran through Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. During this workshop, the museum’s Senior Curator of Photographs John Rohrbach and Archivist and Reference Services Manager Jon Frembling will bring this important part of American history to life using the artist archives of and photographs by Erwin E. Smith (1886–1947). In addition, local historian and Chisholm Trail expert Dr. Douglas Harman will talk about western artworks connected to the life of the open-range cowboy.

Participants will receive two CPE hours in Fine Arts—Art: All Levels; Instructional Techniques: All Levels; and Social Studies: All Levels.

This interdisciplinary program is geared toward administrators, homeschool educators, librarians, PreK–12 teachers at public and private schools, and preservice teachers. Teachers of English/language arts, ESL, gifted and talented, science, social studies, Texas and U.S. history, and visual arts, as well as teacher teams from the same school are all encouraged to apply!
