Book SmART: A Texas Sampler

During this interactive workshop, teachers will get to experience “Gone to Texas,” a game-inspired, hands-on program created by Amon Carter education and archives staff, that uses artworks in the museum’s collection, including Erwin E. Smith photographs and primary sources in the museum’s archives to teach middle-school students about Texas history. Prior to the workshop, participants should read Lisa Waller Rogers’s A Texas Sampler: Historical Recollections, a collection of primary source selections about the daily life of nineteenth-century Texas settlers. While at the museum, teachers will imagine themselves as immigrants who must survive a long journey to Texas and rely on archival materials, such as the Immigrants’ Guide to Texas (1873), to determine essential resources, find ideal areas for settlement, and learn about the people who already live there. Museum educators will provide resources for participants to recreate this game in their classroom and strategies for using primary sources and images to create practical, student-driven experiences that encourage active participation rather than passive learning.

Participants will receive two CPE hours in: English/Language Arts: All Levels, Fine Arts—Art: All Levels, Instructional Techniques: All Levels, and Social Studies—All Areas: All Levels

The first thirty-five teachers to register will receive a copy of the book. Upper elementary, middle school, and high school librarians and art, gifted and talented, language arts, reading, social studies, and Texas history teachers from classroom and homeschool settings, as well as preservice teachers, are encouraged to attend, although others may benefit and are welcome to register.

Space is limited; preregistration is required. Cancellations must be received forty-eight hours in advance of the program or a $25 fee will be charged.

Download the registration form.
